Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is the silent killer of electronic components. A human body can accumulate up to 35,000 volts of static electricity just by walking across a carpet\u2014and a discharge of as little as 100 volts can destroy sensitive microchips. Additive Technologies Compared<\/h2>\n

Carbon Black<\/h3>\n

The most common and economical conductive filler. At loadings of 15\u201330%, carbon black forms a percolation network that drops surface resistivity below 10\u2076 \u03a9\/sq. The trade-off: carbon black reduces mechanical properties by 20\u201340%, limits color to black only, and can slough particles that contaminate cleanroom environments.<\/p>\n

Carbon Fiber<\/h3>\n

Short carbon fibers (typically 5\u201315% by weight) provide both conductivity and significant mechanical reinforcement. Carbon fiber-filled conductive nylons can achieve surface resistivity of 10\u00b3\u201310\u2076 \u03a9\/sq while maintaining or improving tensile strength. The conductive mechanism is fiber-to-fiber contact, which requires careful control of fiber length and dispersion during compounding.<\/p>\n

Carbon Nanotubes (CNT)<\/h3>\n

The premium option: carbon nanotubes achieve conductivity at very low loadings (1\u20133%) because of their enormous aspect ratio. This preserves more of nylon’s mechanical properties and allows for cleaner surfaces with less particulate shedding. CNT-filled nylons are increasingly used in semiconductor wafer handling and hard disk drive components.<\/p>\n

Inherently Dissipative Polymers (IDPs)<\/h3>\n

Permanent anti-static additives that work by attracting atmospheric moisture to the surface, creating a microscopic conductive layer. IDPs provide surface resistivity in the 10\u2079\u201310\u00b9\u00b9 \u03a9\/sq range without compromising mechanical properties, color options, or surface cleanliness. They are humidity-dependent, however, and may lose effectiveness below 20% RH.<\/p>\n
