Nylon Engineering Plastics

Nylon (Polyamide or PA) is a versatile family of semi-crystalline engineering thermoplastics known for their balanced properties. With excellent mechanical strength, good wear and chemical resistance, and relatively high heat deflection temperatures, nylons are widely used as metal replacements across various industries to reduce weight and cost while maintaining performance.

PA6 (Nylon 6)

A cost-effective general-purpose nylon with good mechanical properties, toughness, and abrasion resistance. Ideal for applications not requiring the highest thermal or chemical resistance.

PA66 (Nylon 66)

Offers higher strength, rigidity, and heat resistance compared to PA6. The preferred choice for demanding applications, especially in elevated temperature environments.

Enhanced Grades

Glass-filled, mineral-filled, and other modified nylons are available for specific requirements like higher stiffness, improved dimensional stability, or reduced moisture absorption.

Material Properties & Data

Compare the key properties of standard PA6 and PA66 to help with your material selection process. Data is based on standard pure grades.

Note on Moisture: Nylon is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture from the environment). This can affect dimensions and mechanical properties. For precision parts, moisture conditioning or using glass-filled grades is recommended.

Toepassingen voor de industrie

Nylon's unique combination of properties makes it suitable for a wide range of applications across various industries.

Automotive & Transportation

Engine compartments (under-hood), gears, bearings, bushings, clips, and fasteners benefit from nylon's heat resistance, strength, and resistance to oils and fuels.

Electrical & Electronics

Connectors, circuit breakers, switch housings, and coil bobbins utilize nylon's good electrical insulation properties (in dry conditions) and heat resistance.

Industriële machines

Gears, bearings, bushings, wear pads, slides, and conveyor components leverage nylon's high strength, wear resistance, and self-lubricating properties.

Consumer Goods & Appliances

Power tool housings, appliance components, sports equipment, and consumer product gears benefit from nylon's toughness, durability, and aesthetic possibilities.

Food & Beverage

FDA-compliant grades are used for food processing equipment components like bearings, gears, and rollers where lubrication must be avoided.

Ruimtevaart

Used in various non-critical structural components and interior parts where weight savings versus metal is crucial.

Handleiding voor materiaalselectie

Follow this simple decision framework to choose between PA6 and PA66 for your application.

1

Operating Temperature

Will the part operate continuously above 100°C (212°F)?

  • No: Kies PA6 for cost-effectiveness.
  • Yes: Kies PA66 for better heat resistance.
  • >150°C: Consider glass-filled PA66.
2

Dimensionale stabiliteit

Does the part have tight tolerances in humid environments?

  • General Use: Standard PA6/PA66 with moisture conditioning.
  • High Precision: Use glass-filled grades (e.g., PA66-GF30) for lower moisture absorption and better stability.
3

Mechanical Demands

What are the load and wear requirements?

  • High Load/High Wear: PA66 generally offers higher strength and better wear resistance.
  • Standard Loads: PA6 often provides sufficient performance at a lower cost.
  • For extreme demands, consider specialty lubricated or reinforced grades.
